1. The Ugly Duckling

Once upon a time a Mama Duck sat on her nest.

“These eggs are taking a long time to hatch,” she thought. But a Mama duck must keep her eggs warm until they do hatch.

At last, the eggs began to crack. Pretty yellow ducklings came out of their shells. They shook their little wings and said, “Quack, quack!”

Mama Duck was very happy. They were all so cute.

A brown and green mother duck is followed by 5 little yellow ducklings.

Mama Duck said, “Come on ducklings, off we go to the pond for your first swim.” Then she counted them; one, two, three, four, five.

“Oh dear!” she thought, “I should have six ducklings!”

There was one big egg still in the nest. “Oh well,” thought Mama Duck, “I’d better sit on my nest again and wait.”

The next day, the big egg hatched and out came a baby boy duckling. He was much bigger than the others. He was dark grey and not yellow. And he had longer legs than the others.

One of the yellow ducklings pointed at him, “He doesn’t look like one of us!”

“Such an ugly duckling!” said another.

“That is not a nice thing to say,” said Mama Duck, “he hatched from the same nest as you. Now, off to the pond for your very first swim.”

A tall white duckling towers over 5 little yellow ducklings.

The other ducklings quacked, “Ugly! Ugly! Ugly!”

The Ugly Duckling did not know why the other ducklings were being so horrible to him.

Each yellow duckling jumped in the pond and swam behind Mama Duck. The Ugly Duckling jumped in and started to paddle, too.

“He’s a good swimmer,” Mama Duck thought.

The Ugly Duckling tried to play with his brothers and sisters. But they yelled, “Go away, you’re ugly and grey. And your legs are too long!”

One day, one of the yellow ducklings said to the Ugly Duckling, “We don’t like you and wish you would go away!”

Then they all quacked, “Go away, go away, go away!!”

The Ugly Duckling was sad. “Maybe I should just go,” he thought to himself.

That night, the Ugly Duckling flew away to the other side of the pond. He met two grown-up ducks.

“Can I stay with you, please?” asked the Ugly Duckling.

“All right”, said one of the ducks, “but just keep out of our way.”

“Woof! Woof!”  Suddenly a big hungry dog started chasing the two ducks. They flew up in the air, and some feathers fell down on the ground.

The poor Ugly Duckling was frightened. The dog sniffed and sniffed at the Ugly Duckling then turned away.

“I am so ugly that even a big hungry dog doesn’t want me,” thought the Ugly Duckling with a tear in his eye.

The white duckling cries while sitting on a pond. A dog sits on the bank of the water.

Soon he found a new pond. He looked up and saw a flock of big white birds flying by. They were the most beautiful birds he had ever seen!

He stayed at that pond all by himself for a long time.

Then winter came and the cold wind and the dark clouds made the poor Ugly Duckling very sad and lonely.

He had to go into the cold pond to fish, but it was getting hard to swim. The lake turned to ice. One day he felt the water freezing around him and trapping him in the water.

The duckling sits on a frozen pond in the snow.

“Oh, I’m so tired!” he thought, paddling hard. The ice got thicker and thicker.

Suddenly two big hands picked him up.

“You poor little thing!” said a farmer. He took the Ugly Duckling back to his warm farmhouse.

For the rest of that winter, the kind farmer looked after the Ugly Duckling.

The duckling sits on a pillow in front of a fire. The farmer sits in a chair.

Then spring came.

“Time for you to go to the pond to swim again, that’s what you were born to do,” said the farmer. He took the young bird back to the pond where he had found him and set him down on the water.

“I feel so strong now!” said the young bird to himself, and flapped his wings.

Just then a flock of those same beautiful birds he had seen before landed on the water.

“I know I’m ugly,” he said to them, “so I will go away.” A great big tear rolled down his cheek.

But when he opened his eyes, he saw a reflection in the water. It looked just like one of those beautiful white birds. Why was it so close to him? He jumped back. And the reflection jumped back, too.

He stretched out his long neck and the reflection stretched its neck, too.

“We wish you would stay,” said one of the beautiful birds.

“Yes, stay with us!” said another, “we can all be great friends.”

Three white swans wear party hats.

Then he knew just what had happened!  He wasn’t an ugly grey bird with funny long legs any more. He was a beautiful swan after all!

Suddenly, all the other swans flapped their wings and took off into the sky.

“Come with us,” one called back.

So he flapped his beautiful white, swanny wings as fast as they could go and joined his new friends.

2. Beauty and the Beast

There was once a rich merchant with three daughters. The two older girls were spoiled and wanted the finest things. But the youngest daughter was sweet-natured and so lovely to look at that everyone called her Beauty.

Then the merchant lost all his money, and the family had to move to the countryside. One day, he heard that his ship had come home laden with goods. “I’m off to town,” he said, and asked his daughters what to bring back. The older girls asked for jewels and new dresses. But Beauty said, “Just bring me one rose.

After selling his cargo, the merchant paid off his debts. But to his horror he found he had no money left at all.

The merchant rode home, feeling very sad. But along the way it started to snow heavily and he got lost in the forest. Then the merchant saw a light. It came from a big house. He went in, but there was nobody around.

The merchant found a dining room with a blazing fire and a table laid for one. Since he was so hungry he ate a whole chicken, three delicious desserts, and drank a jugful of wine.

After dinner, he explored the empty house and found a room with a comfortable bed already made up. He was so tired that he crawled into it and fell fast asleep.

The next morning, the merchant found new clothes laid out for him. He got dressed and went for a walk in the garden. He saw a rosebush and remembered Beauty. “Just one rose,” he thought, plucking it from the bush.

Then there was a mighty roar. “How dare you steal my flowers! I will kill you for that,” said the Beast. The merchant pleaded, and the Beast said he would spare the merchant’s life if one of his daughters would take his place.

When the merchant got home and told his daughters what had happened, Beauty said right away, “The rose was for me, father, so I will take your place. Let the Beast eat me.” Beauty’s father wept. Even her sisters managed to shed some crocodile tears.

Beauty trembled as she entered the Beast’s house. There stood the Beast, but instead of eating her as Beauty had feared, he welcomed her into his home.

The Beast gave Beauty a wonderful bedroom, with a magic mirror in which she could see her old home whenever she wished.

Gradually, Beauty became fond of the Beast, but she was shocked when he asked her to marry him. “No,” she thought. “I cannot love a Beast.” But he proposed to her every day.

One day, Beauty looked into her magic mirror and saw that her father was sick. She begged the Beast to let her return home for a visit. “You may go,” he said. “But you must promise to come back after one week.”

Beauty found herself back at home by magic. Her sisters were jealous of the beautiful clothes and jewels the Beast had given her. “Let’s keep her here longer than a week,” they said. “Then the Beast will be angry and gobble her up.”

But Beauty began to miss the Beast. One night, Beauty had a dream that the Beast was dying. So she wished herself back at his house. She went through the rooms looking for him, but they were all empty. Beauty ran out into the garden, and there, in the rose garden, lay the Beast.

He looked as if he was dying. “Don’t die, Beast,” she cried. “I love you! I will marry you!” And suddenly, the Beast was transformed into a handsome prince. He told Beauty that he had been put under a spell by a wicked fairy.

Beauty and the prince were married and lived happily ever after. And a good fairy turned the two older sisters into statues, which had to stand forever at their sister’s gate!

3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

A long time ago, there lived a beautiful princess named Snow White, known for her smooth, white skin. Her mother passed away when she was a child, and her father remarried. The new queen, though very pretty, was wicked and cruel to Snow White. The queen dreamed of being the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, so she would often ask her magic mirror, “Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most beautiful in this kingdom?” And the mirror would always answer, “You are, Your Majesty!”

One day, however, the mirror changed its answer, saying, “Your daughter, Snow White, is the most beautiful one in this kingdom.” Envious of Snow White’s beauty, the queen ordered the huntsman to take Snow White into the forest and kill her. “Bring me her heart,” she demanded.

But when the huntsman reached the forest, he took pity on Snow White. He could not bring himself to harm her, so he set her free. He returned to the queen, telling her that he had killed Snow White, showing her a deer’s heart as proof.

Meanwhile, Snow White wandered through the forest, searching for a safe place. After a long journey, she found a tiny cottage and went inside. There was nobody home, but she saw seven plates on the table and seven tiny beds in the bedroom. Hungry and tired, she cooked herself a meal and cleaned the house. Then, exhausted, she fell asleep in one of the tiny beds.

In the afternoon, the seven dwarfs who lived in the cottage returned. They were surprised to find Snow White asleep in one of their beds. When she woke up, she told them her story. The dwarfs, feeling great sympathy for her, invited her to stay with them. They loved and cared for her deeply, warning her not to open the door to anyone while they were away.

Meanwhile, back at the palace, the queen asked her magic mirror once again and discovered that Snow White was still alive and living with the dwarfs. Furious, the queen decided to make a potion that would put Snow White into a deep, eternal sleep. She dipped a shiny red apple into the poison and disguised herself as an old peasant woman.

She went to the cottage and called Snow White through the window, saying, “Oh, pretty lady! Let me in! I have something special for you!”

“I’m sorry, old lady, but I can’t let you in. The seven dwarfs have told me to stay away from strangers,” Snow White replied.

The old woman persisted, saying, “I have a juicy, sweet apple, my dear. Would you like it?”

Snow White, tempted by the apple, took a bite, and instantly, she fell to the ground. The wicked queen, pleased with her work, returned to her palace. When she asked the magic mirror once more, she was delighted to hear that she was now the most beautiful in the kingdom.

The dwarfs returned home to find Snow White lying on the floor. They were heartbroken and cried all night. They built a glass coffin for her and placed it in front of their cottage.

One day, a handsome prince was passing through the forest and saw Snow White in her glass coffin. He was captivated by her beauty and kissed her. The true love’s kiss broke the spell, and Snow White awoke from her deep sleep.

The dwarfs were overjoyed, and the prince asked Snow White to marry him. She said yes, and they lived happily ever after.

Part I: A Super Summer Story

Once upon a time, in a bright, sunny field, lived a busy little Ant and a fun-loving Grasshopper. It was summertime, and the sun was warm, the flowers were blooming, and there was delicious food everywhere!

The Ant was super smart and knew winter was coming. So, every single day, she worked extra hard. She zoomed around, collecting tiny crumbs, yummy seeds, and juicy bits of fruit, carrying them all the way back to her cozy, underground home.

“Chop, chop, chop!” went to her little feet, as she filled her pantry to the brim.

But the Grasshopper? Oh, he was all about the good times! He loved to sing, dance, and play his fiddle all day long.

“La la la!” he chirped, swinging on blades of grass.

When he saw the Ant working, he’d often call out, “Hey, Ant! Why are you working so hard? Come on, let’s play! The sun is shining!”

The Ant would just shake her head. “I’m storing food for winter, Grasshopper! You should too, or you’ll be hungry when the cold comes!”

“Winter? Ha!” laughed the Grasshopper. “That’s ages away! There’s plenty of time for playing now!” And he’d go right back to his singing and dancing.

Part II: Uh-Oh, Winter is Here!

Then, one day, the air grew chilly. The leaves turned brown, and a cold wind began to blow. Soon, snowflakes started to fall, and the ground was covered in a thick, white blanket. Brrr! Winter had arrived!

The Grasshopper shivered. He looked around – no green leaves, no yummy bugs, no flowers! His tummy rumbled. He was so, so hungry, and he had nothing to eat. He tried to find food, but the ground was frozen solid.

Remembering the Ant, the Grasshopper, cold and weak, slowly made his way to her cozy anthill. He knocked softly. “Hello, Ant?” he whispered.

The Ant opened her tiny door, warm and snug inside, surrounded by piles of delicious food. “Oh, hello, Grasshopper,” she said.

“Please, Ant,” the Grasshopper pleaded, “I’m so cold and hungry! I have no food.”

The Ant looked at him. “Remember when I told you to prepare for winter?” she asked kindly. “Well, I worked hard all summer to make sure I had enough to eat. Now, I have plenty!”

Part III: A Lesson Learned!

The Grasshopper felt very sad and knew he had made a big mistake. He wished he had listened to the Ant.

The Ant, seeing how sorry he was, was kind enough to share a little bit of her food. The Grasshopper learned a very important lesson that day: it’s always good to plan ahead and work hard, especially when the weather is nice, so you’re ready for whatever comes next! And from that day on, he remembered to balance his fun with a little bit of hard work.

One day, during a storm, Ariel saved a prince from drowning and fell deeply in love with him. She wished to be human to be with him and make her dreams come true. Ariel made a deal with the Sea Witch, who granted her legs in exchange for her voice. Ariel agreed, even though it meant she would lose her beautiful singing voice forever.

The Sea Witch warned Ariel that if she did not win the prince’s love and marry him, she would die and become sea foam. Ariel accepted the risk and went to the human world. Though she could walk and dance, she could not speak, and the prince was confused by her silence.

Despite her struggles, Ariel’s kindness and beauty won the prince’s heart, but he was unaware of the true reason for her silence. The prince eventually married another princess, thinking she was the one who had saved him.

Heartbroken, Ariel was about to face her fate as sea foam when her sisters, who had traded their own hair to the Sea Witch in exchange for a dagger, gave it to Ariel. They told her that if she killed the prince, she would be freed from the curse. Ariel, however, could not bring herself to harm him and threw the dagger into the sea.
